How do I calculate actual SIP returns?

Use XIRR (Extended Internal Rate of Return) — available in any spreadsheet (=XIRR function with cash flows and dates) or on your fund app. Simple CAGR or annualised return does not account for the staggered investment dates of SIPs. Example: if you invested ₹10,000/month for 36 months and the current value is ₹4,50,000, the total invested is ₹3,60,000, absolute return is ₹90,000 (25%), but XIRR could be 12-15% depending on when markets moved. The XIRR is the true annualised return measure.

Is it a good time to start a SIP right now?

There is never a universally "good time" or "bad time" to start a SIP — that is the entire point. If the market is high, you buy fewer units. If the market falls, you buy more. If you wait for the "right time", you miss months of compounding and create a behavioural trap that leads to market timing. The best time to start a SIP was 10 years ago. The second-best time is today — if your emergency fund is in place and your insurance is sorted.
